Social Media Campaign Brainstorming Step-by-Step

Hi!  My name is Greg Miller, and I’m a Senior Social Media Manager here at MSI.  I spend almost every waking hour doing, thinking about, or explaining Social Media, and even I know I still have a lot to learn.  That’s the thing about Social Media, as soon as you think you have it figured out, they change it.  Anyone who has ever been upset about a Facebook design change knows what I’m talking about.

So I thought long and hard about it, and I wanted to offer at least a shot at answering that overwhelming question of “how do I do Social Media?”  Below is a quick guide to brainstorming a campaign concept to help you figure out where to start:

Campaign Brainstorming Step-by-Step

  1. Think up a measurable goal before you start (Most important thing you can do in Social Media marketing)
  2. Who is your audience?  What do they like or need?
  3. Is there an obvious need not being met for your audience even if it has nothing to do with your product?
  4. Can you find out what Social Media sites your current or ideal customers spend the most time on?
  5. Look for similar brands to you & see what they are doing (This is NOT your industry competitors, I mean completely unrelated brands that have the same values as your brand)  Can you adapt something they did to your brand?
  6. Is there any current business processes especially connected to sales that you can digitize or make a Social Media version of?
  7. Pretend like the #1 fan of your brand high jacked your channels and didn’t have to answer to a boss or client.  How would they use them?
  8. Is there anything that your fans already say about your brand that you could make into a much bigger promotion?
  9. Can you think of a creative game or contest that would spark user generated content?
  10. Don’t think about how you are supposed to use each channel, think of each channel as a set of tools that you can use any way you want.  There was one advertising agency that created their entire website through a series of YouTube videos.  It actually looked really impressive.
  11. Make sure whatever you do has an element of sustainability even if it is just a theme you can keep going in your regular content.

Well that is by no means Social Media in a nutshell, but it might help you if you are looking to for a place to get started.  Please feel free to leave any questions or additional concepts that I missed in the comments below and stay tuned for more social media insights over the next few days.

“Knibb High Football Rules!”…..Billy Madison reference……never mind.  Good luck with your Social Media Campaign.
